A theater director. A complaint.

A production on pause. A newly hired intimacy coordinator. And what happens after.

Theater director Tyler Terlecki has built a life organized around work, convincing himself that career is enough. But when rehearsals for his latest production are disrupted by a cast member’s misconduct, the careful equilibrium he’s established fractures. To move forward, thirty-eight-year-old Tyler is forced to collaborate with Nicholas, a newly hired intimacy coordinator nearly a decade younger, whose role is not only to repair the production but to help Tyler see how it broke in the first place.

As the two men grow closer, chemistry and connection complicate both the rehearsal process and the stories they’ve told themselves about who they are and what they need. Yet it may be precisely that complication that offers each of them a way beyond the familiar patterns that have kept them comfortable but not entirely fulfilled.

Told with honesty and warmth, this is a character-driven novel about second chances, intimacy in all its forms, and the courage required to keep growing long after you thought you had settled into yourself.

AKA WHAT TO EXPECT

The Lows, the Lewd, and the Light is a character-driven contemporary gay story written in the style of a traditional novel. It is a genre-bending amalgam of literary fiction, erotic romance, and classic romance with elements of all three. Here's a little more on what to expect (and what not to expect):

LITERARY

STYLE

This novel is best enjoyed by slowing down to enjoy the prose in addition to the plot. It is a book with something to say beyond the story.

TOLD IN

THIRD-pERSON

Cinematic. Observational. Guided. Call it what you wish, but it's a timeless form of storytelling. A narrator leads the reader through the tale.

HONEST portrayal of gay men

This is a (strangely) significant hallmark of this novel: It is written by a gay male author primarily for a gay male audience. Radical, right? Well, kind of. Much gay fiction is written by straight women.

EROTIC

moments

In a novel written for gay men about gay men, it didn't feel right to "fade to black" or look away in the lead up to sexier events, so that simply doesn't happen. Instead, those events get their very own chapters.

NOT self-insert fANTASY

This novel is not designed for readers to imagine themselves in the story a la what is sometimes called avatar or escapist romance or POV-spice romance.

NOT

TROPE-HEAVY

Tropes have their place, but they are avoided in this novel. The same goes for clichés and cringe. If you are a buzzword romance reader who likes their MMCs to be F2L and so on and so forth, this is probably not the book for you.

KIRKUS REVIEWS

"Absorbing. an ENGROSSING LGBTQ romance ... [with] A LOT OF CHARM."

FROM THE AUTHOR

"I wrote the type of gay novel that I wanted to read—something grown-up but hopeful with a just-right balance of
smarts, sleaze, and spirit."
